Back on the road

Today was our first day walking again after our well earned (?) weekend break.  We resumed our trek from Shap in the north of the Lake District which is a strange town with a completely random mix of shops, pubs and metal smelters.  Being fully refreshed, we walked through some fantastic countryside for 16 miles without a break.  En route we met some very friendly people who told us we were just reaching the official halfway point of our journey however we have so many different definitions of the distance we will walk that the only thing we can be sure of is that we will be beyond the halfway mark by the end of tomorrow.  We also met three intrepid cyclists in a lay by on their way to John O'Groats who kindly offered to share their cake with us.  Good luck if you are logging onto our website.

We arrived in Kendal for lunch and met Sandra from Coeliac UK who kindly turned out to give us support and guide us through the labyrinthine roads of Kendal.  Many thanks Sandra and thank you also for the very appropriate Kendal Mint Cake.

The afternoon walk was a mere 6 miles down the A6 and we stopped for the day at Levens Hall (the seat of the Bagot family).  Tracey – please try and get more orders over the next few days as Mike wants to put an offer in for the hall as a holiday home!!

Total for today was 22 miles bringing our overall total to 417 miles.

Today's discussion subjects included The Reformation, Rastafarians, Reggae and Rio de Janiero.  As it transpired we knew a bit about Bob Marley but nothing about the other subjects.  As always, your suggestions on these topics and any other interesting topics beginning with ‘S' please let us know.

The messages in the last few days have taken on a distinctly international flavour with comments from as far afield as Australia and Canada.  Chris – good luck with the training when you do the walk next year.

Apologies we will not be blogging tomorrow as ‘International Rescue' will be drooling over four aging pop stars but we'll be back on-line on Thursday.
